The New Search Reality: Understanding AI Overviews and the Zero-Click Challenge

By John Heffernan, RedLive Media

Summary: The traditional search model, dominated by blue website links, is rapidly being replaced by Zero-Click Search Results and the evolution known as AI Overviews.

For hospitality businesses and suppliers, this shift is critical: nearly 60 per cent of Google searches now result in no click-through traffic, as users find answers directly on the Search Engine Results Page (SERP).

AI Overviews, which use generative AI to synthesize information from multiple sources, further reduce the need for manual clicks. To maintain visibility, businesses must prioritize E-E-A-T (Expertise, Experience, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness) and integrate technical elements, such as structured data, to be deemed a trustworthy source for inclusion in AI-generated answers. Ignoring this evolution means sacrificing brand visibility and potential traffic.

The End of Page One Ranking as We Know It

For years, the gold standard in digital marketing was achieving a Page One Ranking on Google. Every SEO strategy, budget, and content decision was carefully crafted to secure the coveted top spot. Today, that goal is fundamentally changing, replaced by a much more nuanced target: visibility within the AI-generated answer.

The search behavior we’ve relied on for decades—entering a query and clicking through a list of blue links—is evolving faster than ever before. This shift is driven by two key concepts: the Zero-Click Search and the next generation of that feature, AI Overviews. For our audience of hospitality professionals and suppliers, understanding this is the first step toward a resilient digital strategy.

What Zero-Click Search Means for Hospitality

A zero-click search occurs when the user’s query is answered directly on the Google search results page, eliminating the need to visit a website. This is ideal for users seeking quick, utilitarian information.

However, recent industry studies consistently show that over 60 per cent of Google searches now result in a zero-click outcome. (Source: Multiple industry studies, including those by SparkToro and Similarweb, have consistently documented this trend.)

For a hotel supplier, a zero-click answer like “Average cost of commercial laundry equipment” means a lost opportunity for a click-through to your product page. For a hotel, an answer like “What time does the Peninsula Chicago’s rooftop bar open?” means a lost direct traffic opportunity. If your brand doesn’t feature in that instant answer, you are instantly invisible.

The AI Evolution: Moving Beyond Single Sources

Zero-click results traditionally featured a “Featured Snippet” drawn from a single source. AI Overviews change the game entirely. Using Generative AI, these new results synthesize information from multiple high-quality sources to create a consolidated, supposedly more accurate, and certainly more complete answer.

AI Overviews replace both the top-of-page zero-click response and often push the traditional website links even further down the page. If the AI summary delivers the complete response required, there is zero incentive for the user to scroll or click through to specific websites.

The critical realization for your brand is this: Visibility in an AI Overview can dramatically enhance brand recognition and trust—it’s an implied endorsement from a major search platform. However, this inclusion is NOT a guarantee of website traffic. Your goal must evolve from driving clicks to driving inclusion and authority.

The AI Overview Prerequisite: E-E-A-T and Technical SEO

The question is no longer if you should adapt, but how. The sky is not falling; the digital landscape is simply demanding a higher standard of content and technical preparation.

To be considered for inclusion in an AI Overview, your content must satisfy both established SEO ranking factors and new AI-specific prerequisites.

Establish Unquestionable Brand Authority (E-E-A-T)

AI platforms are designed to display trustworthy and authoritative sources. You must demonstrate Expertise, Experience, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness (E-E-A-T).

  • Expertise and Experience: Ensure your content is authored or reviewed by subject-matter experts within the hospitality field. A piece on revenue management software should be clearly attributed to a certified revenue manager or a veteran tech developer.
  • Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness: Implement clear author profiles and visible credentials, and ensure your website has robust security (HTTPS) and a strong history of providing accurate, cited information. AI uses these signals to gauge if your information is safe and reliable enough to include in its answer to millions of users.

Prioritize Technical Readiness and Structured Data

AI systems consume and process information differently from humans. If your content is not technically “machine-readable,” the AI simply cannot use it, regardless of its quality.

  • Schema Markup: Implementing schema markup (a specific vocabulary of tags) is no longer optional. It clearly tells search engines and AI exactly what your content is about—whether it’s a hotel service, a product review, an FAQ section, or a pricing guide.
  • Clear, Structured Answers: AI favors content that is clearly and structurally formatted. Use specific headers, numbered lists, and concise answers to common questions. FAQs within your content are golden, as they are specifically designed to feed AI systems with digestible Q&A pairs. (Source: Various Google and SEO official publications consistently recommend structured data and FAQ schema for increased visibility in rich results and Overviews.)

The focus has shifted. It is no longer enough to rank on Page One; the goal is to be deemed the most relevant and trustworthy source for the AI’s single, definitive answer. This requires an immediate audit of your content and technical SEO to ensure you are speaking the language of AI.

Frequently Asked Questions About AI Overviews and Zero-Click Search

1 What is a Zero-Click Search, and how does it affect hospitality businesses?

A zero-click search occurs when a user finds the answer to their query directly on the Google results page without having to click through to a website. This affects hospitality businesses and suppliers by eliminating potential traffic; if your brand’s content isn’t featured in the instant answer, you lose visibility and a possible lead. Industry studies indicate that these outcomes occur in roughly 60 per cent of searches.

2 How are AI Overviews different from previous Zero-Click results?

Traditional Zero-Click results (such as Featured Snippets) typically pull information from a single source. AI Overviews use Generative AI to synthesize information from multiple high-quality sources, compiling a more comprehensive answer. While this is better for the user, it pushes traditional website links even further down the page, intensifying the need for brands to be selected as a trusted source for inclusion in the AI’s answer.

3 What are the two most important steps for my content to be included in an AI Overview?

To be included in an AI Overview, you must prioritize (1) E-E-A-T (Expertise, Experience, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness) by ensuring your content is factually sound and attributed to qualified industry experts, and (2) Structured Data/Technical SEO. Implementing schema markup ensures that your content is machine-readable, making it easy for AI to identify and utilise your information as a reliable source.

In the second part of the new search reality, John examines how to thrive in the zero-click era and explores a multi-channel strategy for the hospitality industry.
