More than half (56 per cent) of Americans intend to travel for at least four nights this fall. Labor Day weekend is a convenient time to do so, according to Tripadvisor’s Fall Travel Index, which uses search and site data between September 1 and November 30, 2022, to reveal consumer travel trends.
The week of September 1–7, in particular, will be the busiest travel week of the whole fall season. On Friday, September 2, keep a close eye on the roads because it will be the busiest day for travel.
To illustrate how this weekend’s vacation travel will look:
Top 10 U.S. vacation spots for the Labor Day weekend
- Las Vegas, Nevada
- New York City, New York
- Honolulu, Hawaii
- Orlando, Florida
- Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
- Lahaina, Hawaii
- Chicago, Illinois
- Miami Beach, Florida
- Key West, Florida
- Nashville, Tennessee
Cancun is the most popular holiday destination outside of the U.S. for Americans traveling over Labor Day weekend and in the fall as a whole. Nayarit, on the country’s picturesque Pacific Coast, just north of Puerto Vallarta, tops the list for the long weekend’s most significant year-over-year rise.
Despite the summertime air travel hassles, nearly half (49 per cent) of Americans intend to fly this fall, including Labor Day!
Major airports nationwide will be the busiest for the holiday weekend as Americans head back to big city getaways for Labor Day. This means that for a hassle-free trip, passengers should make use of smaller regional airports wherever available.
Food and activities
Americans’ top five choices for the most thrilling aspects of a trip are food (54 per cent), activities (52 per cent), people and landscape tied for third (48 per cent) and weather (40 per cent).
Despite inflation, Americans still prioritize travel, so they expect to spend more on their Labor Day vacation plans than they did in 2021.
