Timeshare Owners Show Strong Travel Confidence in AIF Vacation Ownership Sentiment Index Report

The American Resort Development Association’s (ARDA) recently released AIF Vacation Ownership Sentiment Index paints a rosy picture for the timeshare industry. This report, launched in February 2023, provides valuable monthly insights into timeshare owner sentiment and anticipated travel behaviors compared to the broader travel market. It also serves as a gauge for the overall health of the timeshare industry.

Key Takeaways from the March 2024 AIF Vacation Ownership Sentiment Index

  • Timeshare Owners Embrace Travel Deals: Compared to the average traveler, timeshare owners are more than twice as likely (63 per cent vs. 43 per cent) to strongly agree that excellent travel deals are available now [1]. This optimism builds upon a positive trend, with the percentage of timeshare owners holding this belief increasing steadily since January (51 per cent).
  • Economic Optimism and Vacation Confidence: A significant 63 per cent of timeshare owners believe the US economic conditions have improved over the past month, reflecting a stronger sense of security for travel planning. Moreover, a staggering 63 per cent of timeshare owners firmly believe nothing will prevent them from taking a vacation, compared to only 43 per cent of general travelers [1]. This unwavering commitment to travel underscores the importance of vacation ownership for this group.
  • Increased Value Perception and Purchase Intent: For the third consecutive month, both the perception of timeshare ownership as an excellent value and willingness to recommend it to others have experienced significant increases (by +20 points since January) [1]. This suggests growing satisfaction and advocacy within the timeshare owner community.
  • Upgrade and Acquisition Plans: The March 2024 index revealed that a remarkable 71 per cent of timeshare owners intend to upgrade their current timeshare or purchase additional timeshare products within the next two years, representing a +23 per cent improvement over February’s figures [1]. This robust investment appetite signifies strong confidence in the timeshare product and its ability to enhance future vacations.
  • Travel Spending on the Rise: Compared to the general travel population, timeshare owners are over 50 per cent more likely to invest more time and money into vacations over the next six months [1]. Additionally, they are 65 per cent more likely to have already booked their next planned vacation, highlighting their proactive approach to travel planning.

Industry Leader Insights:

“Our Vacation Ownership Sentiment Index has confirmed what we’ve always known – timeshare owners are passionate travelers who prioritize leisure time and are highly satisfied with their ownership,” says Jason Gamel, president and CEO of ARDA [1]. He further emphasizes the positive impact of timeshare ownership on travel frequency, citing the flexibility and quality of accommodations it offers. This increased travel translates to a potential boon for related sectors like airlines and restaurants.

Looking Beyond Monthly Data:

The ARDA report also analyzed yearly trends, revealing some encouraging takeaways:

  • Index Reaches New High: The March index surged by a significant +17 points to reach 126.3, marking its highest level since August 2023 [1]. Indices exceeding 100 signify optimistic sentiments within the timeshare owner community.
  • Seasonal Consistency: The AIF Vacation Ownership Index has consistently demonstrated seasonal peaks in March and August, maintaining a positive track record throughout its first fourteen months of operation.
  • High Satisfaction Levels Remain Steady: For ten consecutive months, over 70 per cent of timeshare owners have expressed strong satisfaction, indicating that their latest vacation significantly exceeded their expectations [1].
  • Unwavering Travel Commitment: The number of timeshare owners expressing unwavering determination to vacation has reached its highest point in six months, solidifying their commitment to travel experiences.

The AIF Vacation Ownership Sentiment Index offers compelling evidence of the positive outlook and travel confidence among timeshare owners. Their increased spending intentions, positive perception of value, and commitment to upgrading or acquiring additional timeshare products all indicate a robust future for the timeshare industry.

For vacation ownership professionals, this report provides valuable insights into owner behavior and preferences, allowing them to tailor their offerings and marketing strategies to meet the evolving needs of this dedicated travel segment.
