According to a survey conducted by Cheaphotels.org, the resort town of Poipu, on the southern side of the Hawaiian island of Kauai, is one the most expensive US destinations this spring, followed by Charleston (South Carolina) and Wailea (Hawaii).

The survey compared hotel rates in several locations around the United States during May 2022. In the poll, only hotels with three stars or higher and those close to a beach or a city or town center were considered for inclusion.

According to the poll results, tourists to Poipu will have to spend an average of $397 per night for the most affordable double room available. In second place is the port city of Charleston, South Carolina, with average nightly rates of $374. In third place is another Hawaii island town, Wailea, with average nightly rates of $354 (see chart below).

Rates have climbed dramatically across the board compared to spring 2021, with the most dramatic increases occurring in Hawaii. Here visitors may expect to pay up to 75 per cent more this spring. On the other hand, the most significant increase is reserved for Charleston and Boston, where rates are more than double what they were a year ago.

Key West, which was the most expensive location in 2021, is now only the fifth most costly destination this year, with a nightly rate of $340. The little town of Calistoga in California is the most costly tourist attraction in the state, with overnight rates of $335 expected this spring.
