As Labor Day weekend approaches, travelers are gearing up for their final summer getaway. According to AAA booking data, domestic travel is rising, with Seattle claiming the top spot as the most popular destination.

Domestic Travel Trends

AAA data reported that overall domestic travel over Labor Day weekend is up 9 per cent compared to last year, while domestic travel costs are down 2 per cent.

Seattle, Washington, has seen a surge in bookings, up nearly 30 per cent compared to last year. This vibrant city, renowned for its stunning natural beauty and thriving cultural scene, continues to attract travelers from across the country.

Other top destinations include Orlando, Florida; New York, New York; Boston, Massachusetts; Las Vegas, Nevada; Denver, Colorado; Chicago, Illinois; Juneau, Alaska; and San Francisco, California.

For those seeking adventure, Alaska cruises are a popular choice. With fewer crowds and the possibility of witnessing stunning fall colors, it’s no surprise that Alaska cruises are sold out for Labor Day weekend.

This surge in domestic travel can be attributed to several factors, including:

  • Pent-up demand: After several years of travel restrictions, many people are eager to compensate for lost time.
  • Favorable economic conditions: The U.S. economy has boosted disposable income, enabling more people to travel.
  • Increased flexibility: Remote work and flexible schedules have given travelers more freedom to plan trips during off-peak seasons.

Road Trip Ready?

Road trips are a popular choice for many families during Labor Day weekend. Fortunately, travelers can expect a slight relief at the pump compared to last year. The national average gas price is currently hovering around $3.50, down from $3.81 during the 2023 Labor Day weekend. However, it’s worth noting that hurricane activity in the Gulf region could potentially push prices up as September approaches.

International Travel Outlook

While domestic travel is seeing a boost, international travel is down 4 per cent compared to last year. Nevertheless, Europe remains a top destination, with eight out of the top 10 international destinations booked through AAA being European cities.

  1. Seattle, Washington
  2. Orlando, Florida
  3. Anchorage, Alaska

Navigating the Roads: Traffic Predictions

INRIX recommends avoiding peak travel times during your Labor Day road trip. Thursday and Friday afternoons are expected to be the most congested, so consider hitting the road earlier or on Saturday. For those returning on Sunday or Labor Day, leaving as early as possible is critical to minimizing traffic delays.

Bob Pishue, a transportation analyst at INRIX, advises: “Drivers should expect the most severe traffic jams before the holiday weekend as commuters mix with travelers. Monitoring traffic apps, local news stations, and 511 traveler information services may help drivers navigate around congestion and reduce driver frustration this Labor Day.”

As Labor Day weekend approaches, travelers are eager to make the most of their final summer getaway. By planning ahead, staying informed about traffic conditions, and considering the latest travel trends, you can ensure a memorable and hassle-free experience.

Inside Hospitality Solutions Perspective

The surge in domestic travel is a positive sign for the hospitality industry. Hotels, restaurants, and attractions can expect increased business and revenue this holiday weekend.

As the industry recovers from the pandemic, it’s essential to remain adaptable and responsive to changing traveler preferences. By offering exceptional experiences and leveraging technology to enhance operations, hospitality businesses can thrive in this dynamic market.
