Innovation and sustainability are two of the most consistent themes when discussing the frontier and evolution of the hospitality industry. The Hospitality Show, an exciting new partnership between the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) and Questex, operator of Hotel Management, has the incredible distinction of accomplishing both innovation and sustainability at once.
Working together, AHLA and Questex/Hotel Management have created a bold and innovative concept that sets a new standard for industry events. The Show itself is a one-stop shop to network with industry leaders, senior executives of hotel brands, owners, operators, management companies, developers, investors, and technology partners.
Debuting at The Venetian Resort Las Vegas on June 27-29, 2023, The Hospitality Show is a new event for the entire hospitality ecosystem with one shared goal: operating hotels efficiently and profitably. With a schedule filled with a wide range of sessions covering a myriad of interesting topics, coupled with speakers representing nearly every major hotelier and service provider in hospitality, The Hospitality Show stands to establish the baseline for all future shows in the industry.
As a partner of The Hospitality Show, Questex has committed to be a part of the solution of tackling climate change and creating healthy spaces that make a positive impact on communities. Along with their vendor partners and colleagues, Questex has joined the Net Zero Carbon Event initiative in the commitment to be Net Zero by 2050.
The result: The Hospitality Show’s sustainability efforts are aligned with Questex’s Quest Zero initiative, and The Show has taken several steps to do so.
Akshar Patel, Senior Director, Events & Strategy with Questex provided additional insight into these efforts: “Questex and our event partners, American Hotel & Lodging Association, are committed to making The Hospitality Show as sustainable and eco-friendly as possible. We believe it is important to make a positive impact on the community and to do our part to help the environment.”
A few tactics that will be applied to the operations of The Show include the following efforts and much more:
- The carpeting, some crafted from recycled materials, has been reduced to two main aisles and a few activations. All carpets will be recycled or re-used by future conventions.
- Lighting and HVAC usage will be limited during the set-up days leading to the show.
- Most printed handouts will be eliminated and made available in a digital format.
- Badges are plastic-free and recycled post-show.
- Food waste will either be donated or sent to a local farm for composting and pig feed.
- Plant-based and meat-free options will be available at every meal.
- The Show will utilize reusable cups, plates, and utensils. All glassware will be compostable.
- The Venetian Convention and Expo Center, where The Hospitality Show is being held, is the first venue in the world to achieve APEX/ASTM Level 2 Certification.
Akshar Patel elaborated further: “We have taken on a 5-pillar approach when it comes to sustainable operations for The Hospitality Show, including education, event production, energy conservation, food waste reduction and sustainable transportation. We have eliminated single-use water bottles, made roughly 95% of all onsite graphics to be reused or recycled, organized with local vendors, staff and volunteers to minimize travel, reduced carpeting and made what carpet we have out of recycled or recyclable materials, committed to zero-waste lunches, and much more.”
Recognizing that working towards a sustainability goal requires a team effort, Ashkar emphasized, “Success is not achieved alone. We want to express our gratitude to our partners, vendors, sponsors, staff, and anyone else who has had a hand in this show for their commitment to our sustainability efforts.”
