The Inside Hospitality Solutions team understands that hospitality professionals face a rapidly evolving digital marketing landscape. With this in mind, we have developed this guide to equip you with the knowledge and strategies necessary to thrive in this dynamic environment.
In this first part, we will explore the latest trends and updates shaping digital marketing, setting the stage for more actionable insights in parts two and three, including over 20 digital marketing tips and detailed implementation strategies.
1 Core Updates: A New Normal
Anyone responsible for monitoring their website analytics will confirm that Google’s approach to core updates has shifted significantly in recent months. The frequency of updates has increased, with notable changes occurring in November and December 2024, followed by a spam update in early January 2025. Marketers were responding to the challenges of one update when a new one came along!
Google’s Danny Sullivan emphasized that these updates are now viewed as “routine and continuous,” rather than major events. This shift indicates that securing organic clicks from Google Search is increasingly challenging for hospitality brands.
2 The Dominance of AI Overviews
Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to reshape search engine results pages (SERPs). Google AI Overviews (AIO) are taking up more space in search results, often pushing organic links further down the page.
As of now, 75 per cent of AI Overviews originate from the top 12 ranking sites, highlighting the competitive nature of digital visibility. Adapting content strategies to enhance visibility in these AI Overviews is crucial for hospitality brands.
- AI Overviews appeared on 47.4 per cent of queries.
- AI Overviews and featured snippets combined occupy 75.7 per cent of screen real estate on mobile and 67.1 per cent on desktop.
- AI Overviews were present for 59 per cent of informational queries and 19 per cent of commercial queries.
Action Items for Hospitality Professionals
To handle these changes effectively, hospitality marketers should focus on:
- Traffic Analysis: Assess web traffic to determine if recent core or spam updates have negatively impacted your site.
- Content Strategy Development: Create a robust content marketing strategy to increase your presence in Google’s AI Overviews.
3 The Rise of ChatGPT and Voice Search
ChatGPT has rolled out several updates that enhance user interaction with search capabilities. Key features include:
- Free access to ChatGPT search.
- Multilingual voice search functionality.
- Real-time query handling.
- Integration of maps within mobile apps for local business discovery.
These advancements signal a shift towards more interactive and user-friendly search experiences, which hospitality brands should leverage to connect with potential guests.
4 Understanding Organic Reach on Google
Recent studies reveal that only 148 search terms account for 15 per cent of all Google searches, with platforms like YouTube, Gmail, Amazon, Facebook, and ChatGPT leading the way. Additionally:
- 44 per cent of searches are for specific branded terms.
- 51 per cent are informational queries.
- 33 per cent are navigational queries.
- Only 14.5 per cent are commercial, and 0.69 per cent are transactional.
This data underscores the necessity for hospitality marketers to diversify their strategies beyond traditional SEO practices to include a mix of SEO, PPC, social media engagement, and email marketing.
5 Preparing for 2025
This year, hospitality brands must adapt their digital marketing strategies in response to these trends. Emphasizing personalized experiences through AI and data analytics will be key to meeting evolving guest expectations.
