Google’s AI Overviews: Your Business’s New Digital Front Door

The way people search online has changed. Google is no longer just a place to find links; it’s now giving direct answers through “AI Overviews” (AIO). This shift affects every hospitality business and every company selling products to our sector. At Inside Hospitality Solutions, we’re here to explain what this means for you and how to ensure your business stays visible and thriving.

The Big Shift: AI Overviews Are Here

Since April and May 2025, Google’s AI Overview update has changed how websites appear in search results. These AIOs are summaries generated by artificial intelligence that now appear at the top of the search page.

  • Prominent Placement: AIOs now appear for over a third (34%) of Google searches. This pushes the traditional website “blue links” further down the page.
  • “Zero-Click” Searches: Sometimes, the AI Overview gives the searcher all the information they need. This means they may not click on any website link, leading to “zero-click” searches.

While this might sound like a drop in website traffic, it’s important to remember that for about 66% of searches, AI Overviews don’t lead to lost clicks, at least for now. This percentage is likely to change as AI Overviews get better. Doing nothing is not an option; you must adapt.

How to Get Your Content into AI Overviews

The key question is: How do you make sure your website and content are featured in these AI Overviews? It comes down to refining your digital strategy.

Strong Technical Foundation

Your website still needs to meet high technical standards for search engines to function effectively. This helps your visibility in both regular search results and AI platforms. Think about:

  • SEO Audit: Check your site’s structure, how pages link to each other (internal and external links), page titles, and how your images are named. A healthy website is the first step.

Content is King, and Quality Matters More Than Ever

AI systems are designed to comprehend more complex and lengthy questions. They also notice when people ask follow-up questions to initial answers. This means your content must be:

  • Human-Authored: AI can spot content that is simply generated from a single prompt. Your content needs human thought, expertise, and unique perspective.
  • Informational and Engaging: Provide content that truly answers questions. High-quality, helpful information will draw more engaged visitors to your site.
  • Think Like Your Customer: When creating content, especially FAQs, consider how your target audience would phrase their questions. Use “Who,” “Where,” “When,” “Which,” “Why,” and “How” in your content to match their search queries.

The Power of Multimedia

While words are crucial, consider how your audience prefers to consume information.

  • Image Descriptions (Alt-text): Always add clear descriptions to your images. This helps both search engines and visually impaired users understand your visuals.
  • Optimized Video: Videos are becoming vital. Since YouTube is owned by Google, make sure your videos are optimized for search within YouTube itself. This means good titles, descriptions, and tags.
  • Voice Search: The use of voice search on mobile devices continues to grow. Think about how your content sounds when read aloud and if it naturally answers spoken questions.

Your Action Plan for AI Overview Visibility

Here’s what you need to do right now to adapt:

  1. Test Your Current Visibility: Utilise AI platforms (such as Google Search with AIOs) and search for questions related to your business, brand, or products.
  2. Identify Gaps: Note where your content appears strongly and where it’s missing. Use this to guide your content creation efforts.
  3. Analyze Competitors: See how your competitors are showing up in AI Overviews. What content are they using?
  4. Offer Unique, Informative Content: Be the best source for answers. Provide the specific information your searchers need.
  5. Provide Context: Don’t just answer a single question. Build out related topics to establish yourself as a trusted source of information.
  6. Easy-to-Read Format: Write content that is simple to understand and easy to scan. Use clear, conversational language.
  7. Headings and Structure: Include related questions in your article titles and subheadings. Use tables, lists, and bullet points to break up text.
  8. Internal Links: Link to other relevant pages on your website using descriptive text. This helps both users and search engines navigate your site.
  9. Author Authority: Include an author bio with your published content. This builds trust and expertise.
  10. Build E-E-A-T: Continuously show your Experience, Expertise, Authority, and Trust. This is a core Google principle.
  11. Fresh Data: Update your research and content regularly to ensure accuracy and relevance. Outdated information loses its value quickly.

Stay Informed, Stay Ahead

The digital world for hospitality is always changing. Google’s AI Overviews represent a significant step in how people find information. By taking action now, you can adapt your digital marketing and content strategy. Create a plan, implement changes, and keep measuring your results. More AI developments are on the horizon, so staying informed is key to your success.

Commonly Asked Questions about Google AI Overviews

Q: What is an AI Overview (AIO)?

A: An AI Overview is a summary generated by Google’s artificial intelligence that appears at the top of search results, providing a direct answer to a user’s query.

Q: How do AIOs affect my website traffic?

A: AIOs can sometimes lead to “zero-click” searches where users find their answer directly in the AI summary without visiting your website. However, AIOs currently appear for only about a third of searches.

Q: What type of content is best for AI Overviews?

A: Informational content, especially that which directly answers “who, what, where, when, why, and how” questions, is most likely to be featured in AI Overviews. Focus on unique data, FAQs, and clear “how-to” guides.

Q: Is traditional SEO still important with AIOs?

A: Yes, very important. Your website still needs strong technical SEO and a good user experience to rank well and be considered by Google’s AI for inclusion in Overviews.

Q: What is E-E-A-T and why does it matter?

A: E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. Google uses these factors to judge the quality and credibility of your content. Building E-E-A-T helps your content rank higher and be chosen for AI Overviews.
