Dealcations Take Center Stage: Smart Spending Defines 2025 Travel Trends
The travel landscape is ever-evolving, with 2025 ushering in a new wave of trends that reflect shifting consumer priorities. Beyond the allure of astrotourism and the tranquility of calmcations, a savvy new approach is gaining traction: the “dealcation.”
This trend, spotlighted by a recent Rakuten-commissioned Harris Poll survey, reveals a significant shift towards value-driven travel, where cost-consciousness dictates destination choices and experience planning.
The survey, which polled 2,059 U.S. adults, found that a remarkable 56 percent are planning a dealcation this summer. This term, coined by Rakuten, encapsulates the practice of selecting travel destinations and experiences based on potential savings and the strategic use of cash-back rewards to offset trip expenses.
“We’re seeing a growing trend of travelers getting creative with how they fund their dream vacations,” states Rakuten spokesperson Whitney Standring-Trueblood. “With more than half of consumers planning a ‘dealcation’ this summer, it’s clear that savvy spending is becoming a key part of travel planning.”
Patience Pays Off: Millennials Lead the Charge
The survey data reveals a particularly strong inclination among millennials towards defalcations, with nearly 80 percent indicating they will delay booking until they secure the best possible deal. This demographic’s patience underscores a broader trend of strategic travel planning, where budget-consciousness plays a pivotal role.
Key Findings: A Snapshot of Dealcation Trends
- Widespread Adoption: 56 per cent of all respondents, and a striking 70 percent of millennials, are leaning towards dealcations.
- Increased Spending, Strategic Approach: While 44 per cent of all respondents plan to spend more on summer travel than last year, a significant portion (79 per cent of millennials) will wait for optimal deals.
- Affluent Travelers Embrace Value: Even among those earning over $100,000 annually, 58 per cent are utilizing cash-back and rewards to fund their vacations, highlighting a universal desire for value.
“This summer, we’re seeing a mix of travel mindsets,” Standring-Trueblood observes. “While nearly half of consumers plan to spend more on their vacations, many are taking a strategic approach by waiting for the best deals.”
