IHS Heroes of Hospitality: AAHOA – the American Dream and the Power of Ownership
In the hospitality industry, we often speak about service, but rarely do we talk about the grit required to build a seat at the table when the doors are purposefully barred. This month, our Hero of Hospitality spotlight belongs to the founders and members of the Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA), a group that didn’t just join the industry; they transformed its very DNA.
The American Dream: Built Against the Odds
The AAHOA story is one of the most remarkable chapters of the American Dream, but it began with a struggle that is too often overlooked. In the 1970s and 80s, Indian American immigrants arrived in the United States with little more than ambition and a profound work ethic. Many channeled their life savings into small, struggling roadside motels, often living in a single room on-site and working 24/7 to keep the lights on.
However, their greatest challenge wasn’t the long hours. It was the systemic discrimination they faced. These entrepreneurs were frequently denied conventional bank loans, faced exorbitant insurance premiums, and were even shunned by certain franchisors who questioned their ability to manage “American” properties.
Instead of retreating, they organized. They realized that while an individual could be ignored, a collective voice could not.

From Resilience to Recognition: The Birth of AAHOA
Founded in 1989, AAHOA was born out of a necessity for advocacy and fair treatment. Hasmukh (HP) Rama, the founding Chairman, and Ravi Patel, a founding member and later Chairman, along with a core group of hoteliers formed the Asian American Hotel Owners Association. The founders sought to build a professional shield for owners, ensuring that merit, not ethnicity, would determine success in the hospitality sector.
Today, that shield has become a powerhouse. AAHOA now speaks for nearly 20,000 hotel owners who collectively own over 36,000 hotels. To put that in perspective, AAHOA Members own approximately 60% of all hotels in the United States.
The Economic Engine of U.S. Hospitality
The impact of this community is no longer just a success story; it is a vital pillar of the American economy. The numbers speak for themselves:
- $704.8 billion in business sales supported by member-owned hotels.
- $371.4 billion contribution to U.S. GDP.
- 1 million U.S. jobs are supported across the country.
- $100 billion paid in taxes annually.
- $51.3 billion in annual supplier spend.
- $327.9 billion in guest spending that fuels local economies.
That’s impact. That’s influence. And it all started with a generation of immigrants willing to take risks, own their futures, and make the American Dream a reality.
Why AAHOA Matters
AAHOA represents the values all hospitality professionals should admire: grit, collaboration, entrepreneurship, and giving back. From advocating for fairer business policies to driving job creation and economic growth, AAHOA and its members are more than hoteliers – they are leaders of a movement that has forever changed the face of hospitality in America.
Philadelphia 2026: A Milestone Anniversary
As we look toward the 2026 AAHOA Convention & Trade Show, the location of Philadelphia carries immense significance. As the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary, there is no better place to honor a group that embodies the core American values of entrepreneurship and perseverance.
Philadelphia is the birthplace of American independence, and the AAHOA story is, at its heart, a story of independence – the right to take a risk and take ownership of one’s future.
A Message from Leadership
Current AAHOA Chairman, Kamalesh (KP) Patel, reflected on this legacy and the road ahead.
“In Philadelphia, the birthplace of American independence, AAHOACON26 is where liberty, leadership, and legacy come alive,” said AAHOA Chairman Kamalesh (KP) Patel. “This event honors the hotel owners who built our industry while equipping the next generation to lead with strength, vision, and innovation. From the mega Trade Show to high-impact education, the Collegiate Championship, and world-class networking, attendees will walk away empowered and energized for the future.”
An Example for Generations
Over time, the baton has passed to subsequent generations. Armed with formal education, a digital-first mindset, and the example of resilience set by their parents and grandparents, these owners are evolving the legacy from single motel management to strategic industry influence.
We salute the original founders of AAHOA as IHS Heroes of Hospitality. They didn’t just build hotels; they built a movement that proves that when you provide a genuine welcome to everyone, the entire industry thrives.
